Definite improvements but still behind (Denali)

GM made some really good strides over previous models but ultimately didn't do enough, in my opinion. They'll likely continue to lose marketshare to RAM for this model generation. To start, I had a 2017 Denali before buying the new 2019 Denali and the improvements are dramatic. The most impressive include the brakes, suspension, and transmission. The brakes are solid and significantly improved over past model year. So much so they almost make you forget you're driving a full-sized truck. The ride on the Denali, which has the adaptive ride control, is impressive and makes the 2017 version seem like riding in a shopping cart with square wheels. Transmission (10 speed on the 6.2L) is ultra smooth and handles the 6.2L power transfer effortlessly and quietly, which is more than can be said for the rickety, tempermental, loud mess of an experiment that the 8 speed was in the 2017.
The areas the 2019 falls short, however, are technology and interior. The Denali Ultimate edition comes with all the available bells and whistles. While the cameras and heads up display are impressive, the rest is not. The touch screen and graphics are sorely antiquated compared to the 2019 RAM 1500. There are no available auto sensing windshield whipers, no adaptive cruise controls, and the lane keeping system is whoafully inadequate for a vehicle in this price range. The instrumentation on the dash is clumsy and navigating the display options is frustrating and the opposite of intuitive.
I drive a half ton pickup because my garage won't hold a 3/4 ton and it's side-load, so the turn is tight. The previous model year had a significantly smaller turning radius and the 2019 requires a 2-point turn to make it in my situation.
Gas mileage is abysmal and nowhere near advertised. Even with the improvements to the transmission and the auto-stop engine, I'm still at least 5 mpg below prior model. Lifetime mpg at 6000 miles is 12.9 (no kidding).…

It is the best looking truck on the road today. 5.3--or 6.2 lots of power, and control. My 6.2 gets better mpg than the five Ram trucks I have owned in the past. Ram gives you more standard truck for less money, and better updated stuff. But my GMC is a power house, great ride--and it looks GREAT ! Ten speed is smooth--…
Base model beats the Silverado

I traded a Buick Verano for my double cab 4x4 base Sierra, which may seem odd, but needs change. I also test drove a Silverado wt double 4x4. Now, I can't speak to the 55k plus Denali, which I have to say was less impressive in interior quality than my Verano, but the base model 4x4 still had the tough truck look I liked, without the Chevy's stripper feel. The chrome grille surround and fact it wasn't white made all the difference. The Chevy really made me feel that I was in a municipal fleet vehicle, while my base Sierra with all off road options is not that far off an AT4. I only wish it had a 2 spd transfer case, but that might be asking a bit much for so much truck for $28k out the door with incentives. I can't comment on reliability yet, but hope that it is good, as the 5.3 and 6 spd have been around forever.
The GMC/Chev double cab is awesome and so far above either Ford or Ram on space. I can actually have 3 real adults in the back. This is the best compromise of bed vs passenger space of any pickup. Ride is truck like, but I do have heavy duty trailering and snow plow options which affect this, so I am not faulting the truck. My only issues so far have been due to manufacturing issues. The paint was scraped on the body and frame where the robots attached them, which I will have the dealer fix, and the window tinting was scratched on the outside. I always thought tinting plastic was put on the inside of the window. Not at Fuyao. But overall, it does everything I could ever ask of it, and looks good as well. Time will tell if it is reliable, but if you want a 6 passenger truck that can go anywhere, don't think you have to get the highest trim level to be happy. If I had advice to GM, it would be to offer one with power cloth front seats and rubber floors and vinyl rear seats for families. The moral of the story is that if you want a real truck and not a Buick wannabe, you can still get one. And check the door sticker. Mine was Union made in Fort Wayne, which was important.…
